Final Reflection

This course provided a refresher in how to use social media personal and professionally as well as how to have my students use it to expand their learning but also protect themselves moving forward.  The point I will carry with me from this course is keeping my professional and personal media separate.  When I first joined social media, I had no clue how to harness the power, but as I gained more experience I understand the true reach and power of social media.  It is important to keep life separate as well as keep your posts protected.  Professionally, I have grown through the understanding of how to incorporate social media into my lessons in order to give students another way to interact with materials.  It social media always appropriate, no, but I do believe it has it places in education, as long as it is used appropriately. Social media itself poses many challenges in today's educational world.  The biggest challenge I faced, while creating assignme...

Social Media Post

When creating a social media policy for the individual classroom, the teacher needs to be careful to make sure all policies the enact follows school or district policy.  In today's society when individuals are fired or publicly shamed because of their social media presence, teacher need to set the bar higher, and be the example of how to use social media in the classroom.  The policy list created below is a combination of my current district's policy and other policies and ideas located on the Internet.  My district does not have a specific policy referencing social media but has policies that are close in nature. 1. Get all policies you want to establish in your classroom approved by administration.  This will save you numerous headaches and surprises.  Administrator like to be kept in the know, the easiest was to to do this is communicate.  If a parent calls to complain, then the Administrator can support you because they approved your policies. 2. Social Media Projects

Social Media in the Classroom Social media use in the classroom allows students to engage in real time activities.  It allows them to take their learning further then just the traditional classroom activity.  It also allows them to be engage in activities in which the currently do.  Every student Snaps, Tweets, Instagrams, or Facebooks something, why not use this an extension.  The idea of meeting students where they are in terms of their use of technology in education. I also see it as a great way for students to be able to connect with others around the country or world that share similar experiences with them. I learned that all the lessons that use Social Media are engaging and takes the learning further than what I could do if I did not incorporate the use in my classroom.  The ability for students to have others peer review their work, help give suggestions, or even build relationships with others is the power that social media has in education.

Digital Content Curation

Digital Content Curation What is it? Adding your personal touch to a handpicked set of shared information.  The information is focused on specific set of information that you chose to share with your followers or fans.  What its not? Digital Content Curaiton is often misunderstood.  Now that we know what it is, I feel it is useful to define what it is not.  Digital content curation is not something that is done through automation or just retweeting or reposting information from another site.  A tweet, a pin, or blog post that is interesting you share is not truly content curation (Ayette, 2019) Checklist for Curation 1. Reliability-How accurate is the information you are select to share?  This has become a very important topic with the explosion of blogging and micro-blogging sites.  Is the information you want to share can be trusted?  The best for this to happen is for you the individual to perform basic tasks before you share.  B...

Positive Digital Footprint

As an educator you strive to show your students the proper way to complete assignments, by modeling what is expected.  As an educator this needs to be done when it comes to social media posts, and developing an online identity.  We stress to students anything posted on the internet is permanent, and we as teachers need to remember this advice.  Below is my 10 Step plan to create a positive online identity. 1. Separate  My Professional and Personal Accounts -When I joined social media, especially Twitter almost 10 years ago, it was new.  Not knowing much about it, I just signed up to see what all the buzz was about.  Through those 10 years of using Twitter morphed into more a connecting with others in both the education world and the football coaching world but one thing I never did was create a separate account for my professional and personal use. I definitely need to separate my personal and professional activities on there. 2. Model the Behavior- I ...

Digital Footprint

What is a digital footprint?  I feel many in today's society have heard this term but do not fully understand it or understand the ramification of this.  A digital footprint is the trail you leave online.  Many may  say so what, I do nothing bad on the internet.  Yet your digital footprint is permanent, and in today's world of everything being technology based it is very easy for people to find out about your online habits. The problem with today's technology addicted world is that many companies will sell your search history, shopping habits, and your social media practices to other companies so that they can push unwanted ads, spam, and other malicious content to you while online.  Teens and adults both do not take their online habits seriously.  High school students today more than ever need to protect themselves online because their past histories can comeback to haunt them when it comes time for job interviews, college admissions, and scholars...

Twitter

The two pictures attached are of my tweet deck with the 5 hashtags I follow.  The first hashtag is a football coaching hashtag  I follow for coaching tips, conversations, and other communications with coaches.  The other four are education specific.  Each of the hashtags are specific to an interest I have and are relevant to my classroom.  If you are not an offensive line coach the items I learned with the first hashtag would probably have no relevance to you so I will focus my learning on the other four.  The #PBL is helping to gear my classes to becoming more project oriented.   From this hashtag I have gained a lot of learning about what a true project based class is as well as ideas that others are using in their classrooms.  The #GoogleEdu is a tag i follow to get a quick idea on how to be more effective using Google products in my classroom or quick tips on using Google Classroom.  As for all four of the education hashtag I follow...
