Final Reflection

This course provided a refresher in how to use social media personal and professionally as well as how to have my students use it to expand their learning but also protect themselves moving forward.  The point I will carry with me from this course is keeping my professional and personal media separate.  When I first joined social media, I had no clue how to harness the power, but as I gained more experience I understand the true reach and power of social media.  It is important to keep life separate as well as keep your posts protected.  Professionally, I have grown through the understanding of how to incorporate social media into my lessons in order to give students another way to interact with materials.  It social media always appropriate, no, but I do believe it has it places in education, as long as it is used appropriately.

Social media itself poses many challenges in today's educational world.  The biggest challenge I faced, while creating assignments is will it fall under my districts acceptable use policy.  My school has a very strict communicating with students policy, and I needed to make sure that all assignments which had communication involved would meet this policy.

The one piece of advice to students taking this course in the future is two fold.  Number one understand the power of social media.  Social media is a great resource for finding lessons, using other teachers as a sounding board, or a way to increase your PLN.  It also has the other side of the sword in which if you are not careful, your posts can get you into hot water at work or with parents.  Remember your posts reflect you as a professional but also reflect the school or business you work.  If your post in anyway does not reflect as a positive on your and your place of employment you should think twice about posting.  My second piece of advice is with your blogs.  Blogs are a great way of expressing your ideas in a short or sometimes post.  Use the blog as a way to reflect and grow as an educator.  Even after the course is finish continue to use the blog as a way to grow as an educator.  The blog itself provided me my biggest challenge and surprise.  I have always thought about creating a blog but just felt I had quality content to add.  As the semester went on, I realized that it is my personal thoughts and feelings and not to worry about what others said about it.  I enjoyed the process of creating my first blog, and I plan to continue to write this blog.
